Looking for inspiration from the belief systems of African peoples and their descendants throughout the African diaspora, Renee Stout embarks on an anthropological investigation characterized by self-examination, self-empowerment and self-healing. Her suite of paintings titled "Pretty Wings (Part 1)" consists of four works with enigmatic titles that evoke personal memories of shared experiences: “We Shared a Ripe Mango,” “No Match for Your Demons,” “We Were Laughing on the Sun Porch,” and “The Missing Book.” Each panel presents a vignette that suggests the fragment of a narrative left for the viewer to complete. “Pretty Wings (Part 1)" is rich with images of mysterious objects that conjure pivotal moments of life hidden in the recesses of memory.
