A bride and groom are dressed in white, a color typically associated with purity in the context of a wedding ceremony. But white can also symbolize surrender, a meaning that Sulton Rogers amplifies here in the groom’s reluctant expression. The trouble underlying this impending union is further suggested by the couples’ shoes, which Rogers painted red—a color denoting passion and sin. Rogers devoted himself to carving after retiring from his job at a chemical plant. As in this work, he often imbued his sculptures with coded critiques of human nature.
