George Luks’s paintings of New York, often executed impromptu and quickly on location, offer a series of impressions of the city. Winter, High Bridge Park offers the feeling of spontaneous encounter. However, it is clear that in this, one of Luks’s more carefully conceived works, the artist has used many carefully plotted devices—deliberate brushstrokes and carefully arranged color patterns and figural groupings—to enhance the scene’s liveliness.
