The American Scene painter Thomas Hart Benton is well known for his uniquely American paintings that combined aspects of realism and modernism. Unlike his colorful portrayals of Midwestern life for which he gained his reputation, Woman at Piano reveals Benton in a quiet, domestic mood. Benton, an avid harmonica player who often participated in musical productions here likely represents his wife, Rita, at the piano.
