Unlike most print series, Roy Lichtenstein’s Interior Series preceded rather than followed his paintings of similar subjects. The works are based on advertisements, most of which Lichtenstein cut from the Yellow Pages. Like Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, and other artists of his generation, printmaking was central to Lichtenstein’s career and was directly tied his painting and sculpture. The artist’s signature use of Ben-Day dots attains full humorous impact in his fine-art prints, as they traditionally disclose the use of cheap printing techniques.
