Explore collagraphs, monoprints, and relief prints in this introductory printmaking class. Learn safe cutting and carving techniques, and experiment with texture as you design stamps, create collage plates, and practice different inking methods to make individual impressions and editions. Dive into the processes of pattern design, hand printing, printing with an etching press, and inking plates with multiple colors, and develop your personal expression through line, texture, color, and composition.
- Week 1: Begin with an introduction to the class and an outline of the printmaking methods that will be explored. Then, practice safe carving methods and create designs using lines, shapes, and visual textures to stamp on paper and fabric.
- Week 2: Combine collage and printmaking techniques to create collagraphs. Use collage materials to make your own printing plates with raised, textured surfaces, and explore inking methods to achieve a variety of textural effects.
- Week 3: Explore a painterly approach to inking. Manipulate ink with brushes, rags, and other tools before passing your plates through the press. Enhance subsequent prints using stencils and other media.
- Week 4: Make a small edition of prints combining blocks and plates created in previous sessions. We will conclude our time together with a reflection on our work and a conversation about what we have learned.

About your Instructor
Daniel Mantilla is a Colombian-born artist with over a decade of experience teaching young people, families, and adults. In his paintings, drawing-collages, and cutouts, Daniel explores ideas of transition and instability. He previously lived in New York City, where he recorded instructional videos for public television. His art has been exhibited across the United States and internationally. He has studied paintings in museum collections in Spain, conducted research on cadmium-free acrylic paint, and holds an MFA from Hunter College.
