In this workshop, we will focus on technical and material properties of paint as it interacts with different mediums and surfaces. This workshop will begin with a short visit to Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys to investigate Esther Mahlangu’s abstract paintings, paying close attention to materials and technique. We will then return to the workshop to create our own color patterns using both geometric and free-form shapes from observation or imagination.

In the studio, we will explore color mixing, paint application, and layering to create abstract paintings using acrylic paint. We will experiment with a range of surfaces, including wood panel and canvas, acrylic paint applications, and acrylic mediums to create our own vibrant and engaging compositions. Instructor Daniel Mantilla will provide guidance throughout the workshop, and at the end we will share our completed works with one another.
