Inspired by Martin Puryear: Nexus, join us to explore form, structure, and construction through three-dimensional sculpture. Drawing on Puryear’s masterful craftsmanship, organic forms, and economical use of materials, you’ll investigate how similar materials can serve multiple purposes, functioning as structure, texture, and fastening systems within a single work. Using wire, paper, fabric, natural materials, and other dry media, experiment with shape, balance, and assembly as you construct your own abstract sculpture.

About Your Instructors
Daniel Mantilla
Daniel Mantilla (he/him) is a Colombian-born artist, whose practice as a maker and educator explores learning through individual and collaborative playful investigation of materials to deepen perception and share knowledge. He explores ideas of transition and instability through drawing, printmaking, painting, installations with sculptural elements, and in collaboration with other artists through publications and performative lectures, dinners, and concerts. His art has been exhibited in the United States and internationally. Since joining the High Museum of Art, Daniel has helped develop and support multi-week classes and collaborates across the museum on making-based programs. He recently participated in Making Meaning, a collage symposium at Vassar College, exploring collage as an expanded thinking framework. Daniel holds an MFA from Hunter College.
Jaffia Royes
Jaffia Royes (she/her) is a multidisciplinary visual artist and educator with more than 17 years of experience in arts education (and more than two decades of studio practice). Originally based in New York and now working in Georgia, Jaffia’s art has been exhibited nationally. Art instruction remains a vital extension of her studio practice, and she works with learners of all ages and experience levels, providing instruction that spans drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Balancing technical rigor with creative exploration, Jaffia supports learners in developing both their skills and authentic visual voices. Through artist-led creative experiences, she encourages adults to engage with artmaking as an ongoing practice of discovery. Royes holds a bachelor’s degree in studio art with a concentration in painting from Florida State University, and she maintains an active practice across multiple disciplines while specializing in oil painting.
