FAQs

What are Explorer Cards?

Explorer Cards are printed guides that focus on a specific artwork on display at the High Museum of Art. The card provides information about the artwork, prompts for close-looking, and activities that encourage deeper engagement.

How do I get an Explorer Card?

Explorer Cards are available in the museum’s Taylor Lobby—the main entrance—near the elevators. If you need assistance locating Explorer Cards, please inquire at the Admissions Desk or the Museum Shop. Explorer Cards are free.

Who are Explorer Cards for?

Explorer Cards are intended to be used by visitors of all ages, from toddlers with their adults to individuals, families, and friends of any age.

How often can I get an Explorer Card?

New Explorer Cards are available at the beginning of each month.

How do I redeem the monthly prize for completing the activity?

First, scan the QR code on the back of the Explorer Card and register or sign in. Next, take your phone, with the redemption screen, to the Museum Shop. Show the shop attendant your phone’s screen and request your monthly prize (while supplies last).

Prizes cannot be redeemed outside of regular museum hours (Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m.-5 p.m.), including special programming such as High Frequency Friday, Friday Jazz, and Juneteenth.

On UPS Second Sundays, please visit the Explorer Card Kiosk, located in the Taylor Lobby, to redeem your prize. The High Museum of Art reserves the right to request you return at another time to redeem your prize.

What happened to smARTbox?

After nine years of smARTbox, our visitors and our galleries are ready for something new! The Explorer Card program utilizes the same ideas of smARTbox – focusing on a specific artwork in the High’s galleries with prompts for looking closely and thinking creatively – and expands access for all ages to use at any time while in the museum. With custom-made prizes each month, Explorer Cards encourage interaction and exploration in exciting new ways!
