American Neoclassical Sculpture

Harriet Goodhue Hosmer (American, 1830–1908), The Sleeping Faun, after 1865, marble, gift of the West Foundation in honor of Gudmund Vigtel and Michael E. Shapiro, 2010.61.

In 2010, a significant gift from the West Foundation of Atlanta established a landmark collection of American Neoclassical sculpture at the High. The Museum’s holdings feature mythological, literary, and classical subjects that reflect the taste and concerns of nineteenth-century Americans. Artists represented in the collection include Horatio Greenough, William Wetmore Story, Harriet Hosmer, and Hiram Powers.
