'Ntan Drum' by Osei Bonsu, Asante Artist, Ghana

Acclaimed Artists

While African artists of the past often were celebrated within their own communities, the notion of authorship was frequently secondary to how well an object fulfilled its spiritual or social mandate. Recent scholars have sought to identify and distinguish known workshops and master hands. The High Museum’s collection includes a neck rest carved by an artist known as the Master of Beneki as well as three works by Osei Bonsu (1900–1977), official court carver for the Asante kings of Ghana.
