Lewis Hine’s photographs of children working in mines, textile mills, and factories like the one pictured here in Augusta, Georgia, not only captured the rogue spirit of these young workers but also contributed to a shift in public perception and policy decisions that ultimately led to the adoption of what are now common child labor laws. Hine was among a group of progressively minded photographers and journalists who used their cameras to document exploitation as part of a reformist mission.
