In this ebullient painting bunches of grapes form a flanking network that contains the bananas, apples, and pears that effervesce from the container. Tolliver chose a palette of cool pastels to offset the exuberance of his flying fruit, while whimsical colors reinforce a feeling of fantasy. The artist played with the border or painted frame of this piece, extending it into and across the image so that it became a design element integral to the composition.
