Broffman was a keen social activist who dedicated himself to documenting, with his camera, some of the key events and gatherings of the civil rights era. This intimate photograph of Dr. King and his wife is part of a series of images made at the end of the Selma to Montgomery March for Voting Rights of 1965. The close-up format of the picture is particularly striking in that it shows Dr. King as an ordinary man and husband rather than as an iconic civil rights leader; the crowds surrounding him are cropped out of the image, granting the viewer private access to the couple’s celebratory moment.
