This poster depicts the interior of Divan Japonais, a cabaret popular in late-nineteenth century Paris and frequented by artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The three figures portrayed were all good friends of Toulouse-Lautrec and were prominent individuals in the Parisian performance and literary scene of the period. Cancan dancer Jane Avril sits at center with art critic and literary journal founder Édouard Dujardin to her right. On the stage at back left is the singer Yvette Guilbert, whose head Toulouse-Lautrec cropped out of the picturespace, but who remains recognizable by her long black gloves.
