This four-color lithograph refers to an incident in 1893 in which the annual Ball of the Four Arts (Bal des Quat’z’Arts) included a procession with a nearly nude tableaux, resulting in police action, a riot, and a trial. The man running in the fore portrays "Père la Pudeur," the self-appointed leader of a morals squad. One of the clowns on the bicycle is artist and writer Adolphe Willette, founder of the arts magazine "La vache enragée" (The Mad Cow), a monthly periodical that ran briefly from March 11, 1896, until 1897, for which Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec made this image.
