Rich and Poor, Jim Goldberg’s biting examination of income inequality in Reagan-era San Francisco, charted a new course for social documentary photography in the late twentieth century. Rather than simply bearing witness to the living conditions of those at the extreme ends of the economic spectrum, Goldberg invited his sitters to reflect on their lives and his representations of them. Their hand-written texts are often frank and heartrending. Goldberg’s collaborative approach raises pointed questions about voice and authorship in documentary photography.
