The celebrated Alabama artist Mose Tolliver began painting full-time after an industrial accident left him unable to work. Along with his own idiosyncratic versions of fruit, animals, and self-portraits, women were a subject he often portrayed. While some of his paintings of women were sexually explicit, here Tolliver depicted a demure lady fully clothed in vibrant reds and blues. The composition draws strength from its subtly shaped areas of solid color.
