Deeply concerned with the physicality of form and how it affects the viewer, Lynda Benglis uses a wide range of materials to render impressions of mass and surface. Though essentially abstract, her sculptures are at once industrial and organic, cerebral and physical, elegant and kitsch. The appearance of Merak changes radically with each angle; from one position it resembles a heavy, lavish drapery billowing in the wind, but with a mere shift of position it takes on the appearance of some exotic aquatic life form.
