Minnie Evans referred to the colorful, intertwining forms she captured on paper as “lost art.” On Good Friday of 1935, Evans began experiencing waking dreams that revealed to her lush scenes of plant and animal life from a civilization that was destroyed by the biblical flood. When Evans’s work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art forty years later this work appeared on the cover of her exhibition brochure. The “magic writing” on the open book held by the leftmost figure in this work may be a form of writing in tongues. The book and the scene around it may also (or alternatively) depict the throne of God as described in the fourth and fifth chapters of the Book of Revelation.
