Jacques-Henri Lartigue was a self-taught prodigy who began photographing the French upper classes when he was a child. Born into privilege, Lartigue is best known for his spontaneous and whimsical portrayals of the bourgeoisie’s leisure activities at the close of the Belle Époque in the early 1900s. In this photograph of an elegantly decked woman and her dog, Lartigue freezes the bustle of motorcars, carriages, and pedestrians of modern Paris into a graphically playful composition.
