Although Lorenzo Scott was brought up in the Baptist church, his paintings more often reflect the style, theology, and iconology of the Roman Catholic religious paintings he saw at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and later studied at the High Museum. By experimenting with artist’s oils, Scott deduced how to overlay glazes to produce soft, subtle gradations of color. Reunion in Heaven is one of Scott’s most highly accomplished paintings. Marked by the ethereal treatment of its visionary subject matter, it represents the meeting in Paradise of children removed from their parents by the state—an imaginary event Scott treats with dignity and open sentiment.
