During the 1980s William Hawkins produced a series of paintings of the landmarks in his adopted city of Columbus, Ohio. This work’s limited yet vibrant palette and the abstract treatment of the building’s fenestration evoke the color patterning and design dynamism of quilt-making, an art form that Hawkins knew from childhood. The permanence of the building contrasts with the Coca-Cola delivery truck. In addition to implying a sense of movement within the composition, the truck may also recall Hawkins’s former profession as a delivery truck driver.
