During a celebratory feast, the second son complains that his long dedication to the family is going unrewarded so that he is not even able to entertain his friends. In Tissot’s modern story, this takes place during a festive Sunday dinner served on the terrace of the family’s house on the river. Appropriate for the weekend, the second son is dressed in cricket whites and has pulled up during a boating outing with friends. The composition’s division into dark and light zones, near and far, showcases Tissot’s mastery of the etching medium.
