Minnie Evans composed this elaborate 1968 painting from at least two previous drawings: an early work from 1946 and a mid-career work from 1951. Displaying the rich color and curvilinear forms that make her work sing, this collage shows Evans in complete command of her medium. The drawing is sure, the composition adept, and the colors fresh. Many disembodied pairs of eyes reveal an omnipresent God. The mask-like faces hint at Carnival, which—considering Evans's Trinidadian ancestry—may explain the frequent comparisons of her designs with those from the Caribbean, where her grandmother was born.
