Although Eugene Von Bruenchenhein filled his home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with thousands of handmade works of art, his work was not known to the public until after his death. His art included oil paintings, Mayan- and Aztec-inspired concrete masks, and an extensive series of photographs of his wife Marie created over a ten-year period. Believing that he and Marie were descended from aristocrats, Von Bruenchenhein also created ceramic crowns, intricately crafted vessels, and miniature thrones fashioned from chicken and turkey bones. Von Bruenchenhein listed his accomplishments as “Freelance Artist/Poet and Sculptor/Innovator/Arrow maker and Plant man/Bone artifacts constructor/Photographer and Architect/Philosopher.”
