Winogrand was renowned for his compelling use of the 35mm camera to capture people on the street in the tradition of Henri Cartier-Bresson. Often holding the camera at an angle and shooting rapidly as he walked, Winogrand embraced elements of chance in his work. This playful photograph of women was published in his second book, Women Are Beautiful, which was compiled in the mid-1970s at the height of the feminist movement. Just as Winogrand liked to break the rules of photographic art and technique, he also enjoyed challenging social conventions by making these decidedly politically incorrect photographs that make evident his infatuation with women.
