While teaching at the Institute of Design in Chicago Gyorgy Kepes embarked on a variety of light experiments, including the production of many photograms. To create a photogram objects are placed on a sheet of photosensitive paper, which is then exposed to light. The objects cast a range of shadows depending on their translucency and the intensity of the light. Kepes skillfully combined natural and man-made forms and developed a balance between realism and abstraction in his photograms, which are among the most dazzling and inventive works of the period.
