The vivid pencil drawing Gardenia is suggestive not only of Joseph Stella’s mastery of the color pencil medium, but also of the diversity of his subject matter and representational style. Stella turned to floral subjects around 1919 after spending time in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Flowers remained a central theme for the artist, both as elements in larger compositions and as the central focus of a single work, such as this one.
