What happens when we see a familiar image in a new way?
Drawing inspiration from the bold visual language of Amy Sherald: American Sublime, explore how culturally significant photographs and personal photographs of friends and family can be transformed through collage. Reinterpret imagery through an expressive lens to illuminate new perspectives and possibilities.
Learn how to manipulate and transform materials like paper, fabric, magazines, and photographs through cutting, tearing, and layering, and leave with a unique composition that highlights how collage can reshape the stories we tell through visual media.
All supplies will be provided, though we encourage you to bring photographs, printed images, or other materials you’d like to incorporate into your collage.
About Studio Workshops
Studio Workshops are beginner-friendly art-making workshops inspired by artworks on view at the High. These workshops provide opportunities to experiment, play, and enjoy new art-making materials and processes. No prior experience is required. Studio Workshops are designed for adults, but all ages are welcome. This workshop is offered three times.
About your Instructor
Jaffia Royes (she/her) is a multidisciplinary visual and teaching artist with more than 17 years of experience in arts education (and more than two decades of studio practice). Holding a bachelor’s degree in studio art with a concentration in painting, she works primarily in oils while maintaining an active practice across multiple disciplines. Originally based in New York and now working in Georgia, Jaffia’s art has been exhibited nationally. Art instruction remains a vital extension of her studio practice, and she works with learners of all ages and experience levels, providing instruction that spans drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Balancing technical rigor with creative exploration, Jaffia supports learners in developing both their skills and authentic visual voices. Through artist-led creative experiences, she encourages adults to engage with artmaking as an ongoing practice of discovery.

Study Hall is a monthly work session that invites Atlanta artists to create, experiment, and connect inside the museum. The program offers a consistent, low barrier space for self-directed creative practice and peer exchange. Artists work at their own pace while enjoying a supportive environment that highlights the museum as an active cultural space.
